Elan Adams, a beloved karate instructor, tragically passed away after choking on a burger at his East London care home, raising serious concerns about emergency response.
East London: It’s a sad story about Elan Adams, a former international karate fighter who died after choking on a burger at his care home. He was just 69 years old and had been a well-respected karate instructor.
Before moving to Manor Farm Care Home, he volunteered at the Green Light Youth Club in Tower Hamlets. Sadly, he had to move there due to health issues.
The coroner’s report revealed that staff didn’t provide the right information to the ambulance service when they called for help. They also had trouble making emergency calls from the residents’ rooms, which is pretty alarming.
On the day of the incident, Elan was given a burger for dinner. About half an hour later, staff found him unresponsive with the burger all over his lap. They called for a nurse, who noticed he was in serious trouble.
When they finally called the ambulance, the call quality was poor, and there was confusion about his condition. Unfortunately, he stopped breathing during the call, and staff had to perform chest compressions until paramedics arrived.
Despite their efforts, Elan passed away at the hospital later that evening. The coroner ruled his death an accident but raised concerns about the care home’s emergency response.
Elan was remembered fondly by many. His friends and colleagues described him as a wonderful man who made a big difference in the community. He was a popular figure and had a real impact on the lives of young people.
The care home has since addressed the issues raised by the coroner, including fixing the call bell and improving communication with emergency services. They expressed their condolences to Elan’s family, emphasizing their commitment to better care.
