Sutton bids farewell to beloved shops as several close their doors in 2024
Sutton: As 2024 wraps up, it’s hard not to think about the shops we’ve lost. This year was tough for many local businesses.
Some big names, like Boots, had to shut down. They entered administration, and it was a real blow for the community.
While a few stores found new owners and reopened, many others are just empty spaces now. It’s a sad sight.
Let’s take a look at some of the notable closures in Sutton.
First up is Boots. Back in June 2023, their parent company announced plans to close 300 pharmacies. Sadly, one of those was the Boots on Station Way in Cheam.
A spokesperson mentioned they needed to focus on stores where they could provide better service. It’s a bummer for loyal customers.
Then there’s Carpetright. They went into administration in July, and the Sutton store on Mulgrave Road didn’t make it. The company cited tough trading conditions and changing customer habits.
They expressed regret over not being able to save more of the business. It’s a tough market out there.
Farmfoods also closed its doors after over a decade in Sutton. The landlord wanted to redevelop the site, which left many regulars disappointed.
They thanked their customers for their loyalty and hope to find a new spot in Sutton soon.
Lastly, B&Q shut down in June after failing to renew their lease. The store on Sutton Court Road will be turned into residential flats, which has sparked some concerns among locals.
Despite the closure, B&Q opened a smaller store on Sutton High Street to keep serving the community. It’s a mixed bag of news for shoppers.
