As New Year’s Day nears, major UK supermarkets adjust their hours for staff to enjoy time off with family and friends
London: As we get closer to New Year’s Day, shops in London are changing their hours. This is to give staff a chance to relax and spend time with their families.
Big names like Sainsbury’s, Aldi, and Tesco are all adjusting their hours for the holiday. It’s a good idea to check when your local store will be open.
We’ve put together a handy guide to help you figure out when the major supermarkets will be open on January 1.
Keep in mind that while these hours are accurate now, it’s smart to double-check with your local store since things can change.
Sainsbury’s will be open on New Year’s Day, with some stores running from 8am to 8pm and others from 9am to 9pm. You can find your local store’s hours online.
As for Tesco, they suggest checking their Store Locator for specific hours, but generally, you can expect them to be open from 9am to 6pm.
Most Asda stores will have similar hours to Tesco, so again, checking the Store Locator is a good move.
Iceland will mostly close by 8pm on New Year’s Day, opening around 8am. It’s best to check their Store Locator for details.
Morrisons will also be open, but hours can vary, so it’s worth checking your local branch. Most will be open from 9am to 6pm.
Lidl, on the other hand, will be closed on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, just like in previous years. They’ll also be closed on Boxing Day.
Aldi is following suit and will not open on New Year’s Day, remaining closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as well.
Waitrose will have limited openings, with only a few stores available for Deliveroo and Uber Eats orders on New Year’s Day.
Most Marks & Spencer stores will be open but with shorter hours, so checking online is a good idea.
Lastly, Co-op stores will be open on New Year’s Day, but with adjusted hours from 9am to 8pm. Again, it’s best to check their store finder for specifics.
