Despite the weather, thousands gathered in London to celebrate the New Year with a vibrant parade filled with music and performances
London: The New Year’s Day Parade kicked off with a bang, despite the rain and wind. A burst of confetti and cheers marked the start of the festivities, which were delayed by half an hour due to the weather.
As the parade was set to begin, umbrellas popped up everywhere. The heavy rain didn’t stop the fun, though. Bagpipers played on, and the crowd braved the chilly air and grey skies.
Brass bands and bagpipers led the way, followed by a guitar band belting out the Beatles’ classic, “Yellow Submarine.” Everyone was in high spirits, dancing and enjoying the show.
Even the DJs, dressed in plastic raincoats, kept the party going with upbeat calypso tunes from an open-top bus. A cheerleading troupe also added to the lively atmosphere.
With over 10,000 performers from around the world, the parade was a sight to see, according to spokesman Dan Kirkby. He mentioned that safety was the priority, which is why they had to wait for the go-ahead to start.
Unfortunately, the giant inflatable characters were grounded due to the weather, but that didn’t dampen the excitement. The Met Office had issued a yellow wind warning, predicting heavy rain and strong winds.
Byron Villis, a 16-year-old visiting from Bristol, said he was having a blast. He loved the floats and the music, feeling that the performers had already done the hard work. His mom, Nina, agreed, saying it felt disrespectful not to support the event.
Gary Harris, a 55-year-old from Croydon, shared that he came to support the parade, rain or shine. He’s been attending for three years and felt it was important to show up.
Helene Dahlin and Emma Jorgensen, two visitors from Denmark, were excited to experience the parade. They noted how different it was from back home, where people would typically be nursing hangovers on New Year’s Day.
Despite the wet conditions, the energy was infectious, and everyone seemed to be having a great time celebrating the New Year together.
