Tensions rise as police caution protesters about potential disruptions near a synagogue during a planned march in London
London: Pro-Palestinian protesters are gearing up for a showdown with police. They’re planning to march from the BBC’s HQ, despite police asking them not to because it’s too close to a synagogue.
The Met Police warned that this march could cause “serious disruption” since it’s right next to the Central Synagogue. But the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) is determined to go ahead, claiming the BBC has been biased in its reporting.
Many MPs from different parties are against the planned route. They’re worried about how it might affect the synagogue during the Sabbath. A letter signed by at least 83 MPs has been sent to the police, urging them to protect the Jewish community.
The letter highlights that Jewish families have felt intimidated by large protests on Saturdays, which has kept them away from their services. They’re asking the police to ensure that protests don’t happen near synagogues.
If the PSC sticks to its route, the police might impose conditions on the march. A police spokesperson said they’ve communicated their concerns to the PSC, emphasizing that the protest could disrupt Shabbat services.
They’re hoping the PSC will change their plans, but if not, they might have to take action under the Public Order Act. The PSC, however, is not backing down. They’ve condemned the police’s stance, saying it’s an attempt to suppress their right to protest.
With the march just over a week away, tensions are definitely running high. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
