The Metropolitan Police are deploying facial recognition tech to tackle crime in Lambeth’s busiest areas, enhancing public safety.
Lambeth: The police are stepping up their game with facial recognition tech to fight crime in the area. They’re rolling it out in the busiest spots today.
As folks walk through these areas, their faces will be scanned in real-time. The system checks against a watchlist of people the police are looking for.
This watchlist can include anyone from those wanted by the courts to people suspected of serious crimes. It’s a pretty serious measure to keep the streets safer.
Last March, the same tech helped nab nine people in Woolwich and Romford, including some for child cruelty and burglary. So, it’s definitely making an impact.
Lindsey Chiswick from the Met said this tech is a smart way to catch criminals before they strike. Plus, if there’s no match, all images are wiped out right away.
They’re also working with the London Policing Ethics Panel to make sure everything’s above board. It’s all about keeping the community safe while respecting privacy.
