Lambeth Bridge will undergo extensive renovations to enhance cyclist safety, impacting traffic in South London for several months
Lambeth: So, guess what? Lambeth Bridge is going to be closed for a while. They’re doing some serious work to make it safer for cyclists, who have had a tough time there.
Transport for London has already started changing things up by getting rid of the roundabouts at both ends of the bridge. They’re putting in signalized crossroads instead, which should help keep cyclists and cars apart.
According to TfL, that northern junction is actually the most dangerous spot in London for cyclists. Can you believe it? In just three years leading up to 2021, there were 23 crashes there, and 21 of those involved cyclists.
As part of the upgrades, they’re also swapping out zebra crossings for signal-controlled pedestrian ones on the Westminster side. Plus, they’re adding permanent security measures to keep everyone safe while walking or cycling.
New cycle lanes are on the way too, and they’ll be waterproofing and repairing the bridge deck. But here’s the kicker: the bridge will be completely shut down for two weekends in the coming months.
Mark your calendars for February 7-10 and July 18-21. There will also be overnight closures from January 30 to February 7. After that, from February 10 to December 15, vehicles heading south will be out of luck, but pedestrians and cyclists can still cross.
During the one-way closure, only pedestrians will be allowed on the bridge overnight and during full closures. They’re also changing up the traffic flow around the bridge to make it safer.
Oh, and that palm tree at the northern roundabout? It’s been moved to Churchill Gardens Estate. TfL said the trees on the Lambeth side weren’t fit for replanting, but they’ll be planting new ones and adding some ground-level planters.
