Every year since 2018, this number has climbed, showing just how tough things are. Back in 2013, the figure was slightly higher, but it’s clear we’re in a crisis.

This situation is a big challenge for the Labour Government, which has promised to build 1.5 million new homes by 2029. Social housing includes both council homes and housing association properties, and rents are based on local incomes.

Interestingly, nearly a quarter of those waiting are in Newham or Lambeth. Newham tops the list with over 38,000 households, while Lambeth isn’t far behind.

Grace Williams from London Councils said the city is facing a severe housing crisis. She emphasized the urgent need for more social housing as London becomes less affordable.

Despite the challenges, boroughs are committed to building more affordable homes. However, they’re struggling with limited resources and various obstacles in housing delivery.

Even though Greater London has only 16% of England’s population, it accounts for 25% of the households waiting for social homes. The North West has the second-largest waiting list, but it’s nowhere near London’s numbers.

Williams, who also leads Waltham Forest Council, is determined to improve the situation. She mentioned the financial gap in social housing budgets, which is around £700 million over the next few years.

There’s a strong call for more financial support to help boroughs manage the growing demand for social housing and to ensure they can build new homes.
