Explore London’s festive choir scene with carols and sing-alongs for everyone this holiday season
London: Christmas is a magical time, and even those who don’t usually attend church might find themselves drawn in by the charm of a candlelit service. Midnight mass is especially lively, with folks from the pub joining in to sing a bit louder than usual, all while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
If you’re looking to soak up some Christmas carols this year, there’s something for everyone in the city.
First up, how about St Paul’s Cathedral? It’s a stunning spot to enjoy carols, and it feels like stepping into a Dickens novel. They have several free services throughout December, but be prepared for a crowd.
Then there’s St Martin-in-the-Fields, right by Trafalgar Square. It’s super festive with the Christmas tree from Norway. They host evening concerts featuring classics like O Holy Night, and you can even grab some mulled wine and mince pies on certain nights. Plus, it’s free!
For a truly iconic experience, check out the Royal Albert Hall. It’s hard to beat the atmosphere of a choir singing with a full orchestra. This year, Jess Gillam and James Beardswell will lead the festivities, and you can join in the singing too. Tickets start at £59.50.
If you’re in Chelsea, don’t miss the Christmas market at Ranelagh Gardens. It’s transformed into a winter wonderland, and the Chelsea Pensioners Choir performs every evening. There’s plenty of festive food and drink to enjoy while you listen, and it’s free, but get there early!
Westminster Abbey is another must-visit. They have a range of concerts and services, from classic carols to midnight mass. All events are free, but some require booking, so plan ahead to catch some of the best choristers in the country.
And if you’re curious about something a bit different, check out LondonSwede’s Lucia Night. It’s a unique celebration with a candle procession and traditional songs, held at the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall. Tickets start at £35.
Finally, for a calmer vibe after a busy day of shopping, All Souls Langham Place is a great choice. They host various carol services, and you’re welcome to sing along. It’s free, but again, arriving early is a good idea.
Last but not least, Smith Square Hall is hosting performances from the Parliament Choir as part of their Christmas Festival. It’s a lovely venue with a rich history, and tickets start at £15.
