A contraflow system will be set up on the M20 starting December 16 to manage heavy Christmas traffic at Kent ports
Kent: So, here’s the scoop. Starting December 16, they’re rolling out a contraflow system on the M20. This is all part of Operation Brock, which is designed to keep traffic moving smoothly during the busy holiday season.
The contraflow will cover a 13-mile stretch between junctions 8 and 9. They’re expecting a lot of folks heading to the Kent ports, so they want to be prepared.
To set this up safely, the M20 will be closed overnight from 8 PM on December 15 until 6 AM on December 16. This closure will affect both the London-bound and coastbound lanes.
Drivers will need to follow diversion routes during this time instead of relying on their satnavs. Once the M20 reopens, the contraflow will be in action.
If you’re driving HGVs to the Port of Dover or Eurotunnel, you’ll need to join Operation Brock at junction 8. Other drivers should look for signs to switch over to the contraflow.
Sean Martell from National Highways mentioned that their goal is to keep traffic flowing, especially during these busy periods. He advised travelers to plan ahead, check with their travel operators, and allow extra time for their journeys.
He also reminded everyone to pack some essentials like food and water, just in case. The contraflow is part of a broader effort to make sure traffic in Kent runs smoothly, even if there are disruptions across the Channel.
