Central London remains on lockdown as police probe a serious incident involving a car crash and attempted murder on Christmas Day
London: A busy theatre district in central London is still closed off as police dig into a serious crash that happened on Christmas Day.
Officers rushed to Shaftesbury Avenue around 12:45 AM after reports of a car driving the wrong way. Four people were hurt, and one is in a life-threatening condition.
As of December 26, the road remains shut from Wardour Street to Rupert Street, causing multiple bus routes to be diverted.
The closure stretches between the Gielgud Theatre, where they perform Oliver, and the Sondheim Theatre, home to Les Miserables.
A 31-year-old man was arrested shortly after the crash on suspicion of attempted murder. Police believe he had an altercation at a nightclub before getting behind the wheel and driving onto the pavement.
They confirmed this is an isolated incident and not related to terrorism. Blood and clothing were scattered across the pavement near a Caffe Concerto, and forensic teams were seen collecting evidence.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy mentioned that officers acted quickly, working with City of London Police to make an arrest within minutes.
Detectives are moving fast with their inquiries, and several scenes are still active today. Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the police or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
