Bexley Council criticizes TfL for ignoring concerns over new tunnel charges
Bexley: The council is really upset with Transport for London (TfL). They feel like their worries about the new tunnel charges are being brushed aside.
Before these charges for the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels were set in stone, the council wanted a proper look at how it would affect the local economy.
But when TfL had their board meeting in December, they went ahead with their plans with hardly any changes.
The council believes these charges will hit families hard and make it tough for small businesses that depend on vehicles.
It’s frustrating because the £1 discount for local businesses doesn’t even apply to Bexley.
Councillor Richard Diment expressed his disappointment, saying it feels like another blow to residents and local businesses.
He mentioned that they really need better discounts and more support, especially since public transport options in the area are pretty limited.
They’ve been pushing for improved transport links and more investment in public transport, but it seems like no one is listening.
Starting April 7, 2025, drivers using the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels will face these new charges.
For cars, motorbikes, and small vans, it’ll be £1.50 during off-peak times and £4 during peak hours if you use Auto Pay.
Large vans will pay £2.50 off-peak and £6.50 during peak times, while HGVs will be charged £5 off-peak and £10 during peak hours with Auto Pay.
The council’s worries will be on the agenda at the transport subcommittee meeting on January 15.
