Arsenal’s hopes for the Carabao Cup fade after a rare home loss to Newcastle
London: Arsenal faced a tough night at the Emirates, losing 2-0 to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. This was their first home defeat of the season, and it really puts their Wembley dreams in jeopardy.
Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon scored the goals that sealed the win. Arsenal had been on a solid run at home since last April, but they just didn’t show up this time.
Now, Mikel Arteta’s squad has a big task ahead of them. They need to turn things around in the second leg at St James’ Park on February 5. That’s a tough place to go, especially since they’ve already lost there in the league this season.
Arsenal made some changes to their lineup after a frustrating draw against Brighton. Kai Havertz was back in action after being sick, while Gabriel Jesus started on the bench. They also brought back Jurrien Timber from suspension.
On the other hand, Newcastle only made one change from their last match. Joe Willock stepped in for the suspended Bruno Guimaraes. The Magpies were looking strong, and they showed it right from the start.
It was a lively game, with both teams creating chances. Arsenal had a few close calls but couldn’t find the back of the net. They were pushing hard, but Newcastle’s defense held firm.
Then, just before halftime, Isak scored a stunning goal, putting Newcastle ahead. Arsenal tried to respond quickly, but luck wasn’t on their side.
The second half started with Arsenal on the front foot, but they were caught off guard again. Gordon scored the second goal, and the away fans went wild. It was a tough night for the Gunners, and they’ll need to regroup fast.
