A rally against Donald Trump’s presidency is set for Whitehall on inauguration day, with hundreds expected to join the protest.
London: A protest against Donald Trump’s presidency is happening in Whitehall on his inauguration day. It’s set to kick off at 5 PM in Richmond Terrace.
Organizers, Stand Up To Racism, are calling it the “Together Against Trump” rally. They’re rallying against what they see as Trump’s “unabated racism” that fuels the far right globally.
They want to unite people against this reactionary agenda that they believe threatens everyone and the planet. With Trump in charge, they’re worried about the NHS facing threats from American privateers.
The group is urging the British government to stand up against Trump’s dangerous policies. Trump, who has faced impeachments and criminal charges, will be sworn in as the 47th president later today.
Due to the cold weather in Washington DC, the inauguration ceremony has been moved indoors. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police have been in touch with the protest organizers to set some conditions.
To avoid major disruptions, protesters will need to stay in Richmond Terrace. The police expect the demonstration to wrap up by 7 PM.
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s Peace and Justice Project is backing the rally. This comes after Corbyn called for the release of police bodycam footage from a recent pro-Palestine protest.
Corbyn and fellow MP John McDonnell were both interviewed by police after that protest, where over 75 people were arrested. They voluntarily went to the police station for questioning.
Corbyn has stated that the police’s account of the events isn’t accurate, adding to the ongoing discussions about protests and police actions.
