TfL is testing AI tech to boost safety on platforms, following recent incidents
London: Transport for London (TfL) is stepping up its game with new AI tech to keep passengers safe on station platforms. They’re currently testing this technology at Custom House station on the Docklands Light Railway.
This system uses security cameras to spot objects on the tracks, like people who might accidentally fall or jump onto them. If something’s detected, the control center gets an alert to take action.
TfL is looking to expand these trials to other locations later this year. They’ve already tried similar AI systems at Willesden Green, where they monitored for fare dodging and even checked for weapons.
Recently, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced an AI Opportunities Action Plan, aiming to make the UK a leader in AI. However, the news about TfL’s trials came up after a concerning incident involving Lord Blunkett, who fell into a gap while boarding a train.
After this incident, Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his regret and mentioned that TfL is committed to improving safety. They’re actively reviewing safety measures and incidents to ensure passengers are protected.
TfL’s plan includes specific actions to enhance safety and quickly alert staff during incidents. They’re prioritizing the trial of new AI systems in 2025 to better protect passengers at the platform edge.
