London: Some new research from SpareRoom has shed light on a common issue for flatsharers, especially during the festive season. It turns out that noisy flatmates can really mess with your sleep.

Sleep is super important, right? But it seems like it can be easily disrupted by all sorts of noise at home. According to the study, a whopping four in five renters have their sleep interrupted by flatmates at least once a week. And get this—one in seven is disturbed every single night!

On average, flatsharers are losing over 218 hours of sleep each year. The biggest offenders? Slamming doors, noisy late-night arrivals, socializing, and, believe it or not, flatmates getting busy. It’s a lot to deal with!

To combat the noise, more and more renters are turning to audio sleeping aids. About 27% of those surveyed said they use them to drown out the sounds from their flatmates.

But here’s the kicker: nearly a third of flatmates have had to move out because they just couldn’t take the constant disturbances anymore. That’s a pretty drastic step!

And it’s not just moving out—64% of renters have had arguments about noise. While 80% have tried talking to their flatmates about it, 30% of those conversations ended in denial or indifference. Yikes!

To help ease the tension, SpareRoom has come up with something called The Pre-nap agreement. It’s a fun way to set some ground rules for nighttime peace.

Matt Hutchinson, the Director at SpareRoom, says flatsharing can be a great experience, but it does come with its challenges. The Pre-nap agreement aims to protect those precious sleep hours and encourage friendly chats about noise issues.
